Evidencing the personal skills requirement for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector
24 September 2008
Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) together with the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS), Standards Verification UK (SVUK ) and the Institute for Learning (IfL) have been working together to define the process for evidencing the personal skills of teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector.
Evidencing personal skills in literacy and numeracy is a mandatory element of professional formation and contributes to gaining licensed practitioner status Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) and Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS). It is necessary for teachers who are required or opt to gain licensed practitioner status to provide evidence that they have these skills. More information about professional formation can be found on the Institute for Learning (IfL) website.
LLUK has produced a list of qualifications that have been approved by the Secretary of State as evidence that an individual has the required literacy and numeracy skills to become licensed to practice in the further education (FE) sector in England. These can be found on the SVUK website.
Evidencing Personal Skills in Literacy and Numeracy - Guidance for teachers and employers through approved qualifications has been issued, and is available to download here.
Further guidance will explain how teachers can evidence personal skills in literacy and numeracy through 'other accredited evidence'. Teachers wishing to use 'other accredited evidence' should wait for guidance from IfL.
A process to evidence personal skills in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is currently being considered, and will be confirmed at a later date.
