Northern Ireland Online CPD Project

Lifelong Learning UK has been commissioned by Department of Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland to carry out a number of tests and trials to determine the feasibility of an online continuing professional development tool utilising Lifelong Learning UK professional standards. Continuing Professional Development is recognised as being crucial within the lifelong learning sector, as it is the sector that trains and educates the nation it is imperative for teachers, tutors and trainers to consistently improve their skills and techniques. This project will seek to identify and provide a consistent template for action which can be replicated and extended across our footprint in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Working with participant organisations from three areas of work within Northern Ireland namely further education colleges, work based learning and community learning and development providers there will two groups of staff each containing a maximum of 16 participants, involved in the project. Following interest received from the libraries, archives and information services a representative from this area of work was also included in the pilot.

The project decided to select and develop the CPD Engage tool to pilot this approach. CPD Engage was originally developed by Learning Skills Development Agency Northern Ireland. The pilot was run between February and March 2009 and has now been completed. A second phase of the project has now been agreed with Department for Employment and Learning Northern Ireland and will commence during 2009.
