London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games

The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games represent a marvellous opportunity for the whole of the UK. Although the games will only last for a few weeks from 27th July 2012, their impact will be seen for many years to come. This legacy will be appreciated not just in London (a games centre will be located in most regions/nations) or in terms of new and improved sports facilities.

A major impact will be on skills, for the direct workforce involved in the games, the indirect workforce in associated sectors, and the wider workforce, with, for example, the financial services sector expecting an increase. 

How does this affect the lifelong learning workforce?

The UK workforce will require new and/or additional skills in order to make the games a success and this depends on a skilled and adaptable lifelong learning workforce. Whether it is in encouraging young people to understand a global perspective (a role for development education), inspiring people from the five main Games boroughs in London to enter the pre-volunteer programme (a role for youth and community workers), or upskilling the customer service skills of those in the hospitality industry, lifelong learning employers will be at the heart of the transformation.

How is LLUK involved?

LLUK has been a key contributor to three surveys with the Skills of Business Network. The first looked at the skills needed to improve the visitor experience with the second focussing specifically on customer service.
