Review of technology in teacher training
Technology and social media are transforming our lives and are beginning to transform the way we teach and learn. Over the last 20 years, the proportion of people using IT in their jobs has nearly doubled to 77 per cent, with an estimated 22 million people using technology at work.
Lifelong Learning UK is supporting those working in the lifelong learning sector to harness the use of technology and help learners to develop the skills they need to work in the 21st century.
We see the use of technology in learning as a growing priority for workforce development, and our work this year will include a review of the use of technology in initial teacher training (ITT) and continuing professional development (CPD) in the further education sector in England.
This research will review the current use of technology in both the delivery and content of ITT and CPD programmes for teachers, tutors and trainers in further education.
By doing this, we will identify the current skills needs of those teacher educators delivering ITT and CPD, in order to effectively use technology in their practice to support teaching and learning.
The review will look at the content of current training courses including:
- Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
- Certificate in teaching in the lifelong learning sector (CTLLS)
- Diploma in teaching in the lifelong learning sector (DTLLS)
It will also identify the extent of provision currently available for trainee teachers to develop their own skills in the effective use of technology, through access to e-learning and ICT.
Lifelong Learning UK will respond to the recommendations of this review in early 2010, which may result in an update to the current awarding institution guidance for initial teacher training.
