Learner Involvement NOS

Learner Involvement National Occupational Standards (LI NOS)

Lifelong Learning UK is currently developing new National Occupational Standards for Learner Involvement.  The need for these standards was identified through the government's Further Education (FE) White Paper 2006 - "Further Education: Raising Skills, Improving Life Chances" - to develop standards for student liaison officers (SLOs) within the FE sector.

A scoping exercise was completed in April 2008 which explored the requirement of standards for the SLO role across the four nations of the UK and whether there was any desire for the development of National Occupational Standards (NOS) rather than professional standards.  The resulting recommendation was that NOS should be developed.  Lifelong Learning UK, supported by DIUS, will therefore be developing NOS to support the student liaison officer role.  Lifelong Learning UK's Project Board deemed the term 'Learner Involvement' as being the most appropriate, as it is a term recognised throughout FE, work based learning, and adult and commumity learning providers across all four nations, and also illustrates how the SLO role plays an important part in highlighting the 'Learner Voice'.

A series of consultations on the draft NOS will take place with key stakeholders (including SLOs) across the UK, both electronically and through workshops.  Consultation will be open from 5 January 2009 to 6 February 2009 with the project due to complete by 31 March 2009.  Further details about the consultation are available here.
