Why we collect SIR data
LLUK has been commissioned by the Secretary of State of the Department of Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS) to collect and disseminate the Staff Individualised Record (SIR) data about the further education (FE) sector in England.
SIR data collection falls within priority 1 of the Workforce Strategy for the FE Sector 2007-2012: Understanding the nature of the workforce.
Benefits of SIR data
- Allocation of additional funding to the FE sector (such as £30m to support commitments made in 'Equipping Our Teachers for the Future' 2004 and the additional £48m from DIUS to address gaps in skills and availability of the workforce)
- Influencing the Comprehensive Spending Review process for the FE sector
- Making the case to government for investment in the professionalisation of staff, for example, Success for All targets
- Supporting of development initiatives, such as Golden Hellos and teaching bursaries
- Identification of potential shortages in specific skills and support initiatives for improvement
- Provision of information about diversity profiles for the workforce to compare to the community context
LLUK SIR data collection process:
- is easy to use and easy to access using the latest web technology
- validates data submission from providers
- enables the production of year-on-year trends; geographical patterns; 'state of the nation' reports and bespoke analysis for providers
