It is important to realise that each Higher Education Institute (HEI) is autonomous to a large degree and that conditions of service vary within sector.
Higher Education and funding and quality criteria emphasise the importance of high quality research - the research grade is all important. Consequently, academic staff contracts are often a combination of teaching and research hours, although there may have also been some 'teaching only' contracts.
