Standards - What do all teachers know and do?

The new overarching professional standards for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector in Wales consist of a range of statements (organised into 5 "domains"), which detail the knowledge, understanding and professional practice of all teachers working in the lifelong learning sector in Wales, in other words; what all teachers should know and be able to do.

In practice, each statement in the standards will be applied differently by individual teachers, depending on their subject area or specialism. For example, the standards state that all teachers need to keep their knowledge and understanding of their own subject up to date.

This acknowledges that all teachers work from a base of knowledge and understanding which is relevant to their own subject area, and that teachers should update themselves on a regular basis.  This underlying principle remains the same whatever the subject area.

The standards do not go as far as to list current knowledge and skills for each subject area as there are so many different subject areas across the lifelong learning sector and in most cases there are recognised sources of information about the knowledge and understanding which is appropriate for teachers of that subject.
