Colleges share spoils of workforce development award

19th March, 2007

The winners of an acclaimed award for FE colleges in Wales have been announced. Six colleges competed for the fforwm/ LLUK Workforce Development in Post-16 Education and Training award. But the submissions of two colleges were of such a remarkably high standard that the deserved recipients, Llandrillo College and Coleg Menai, were awarded joint first.

Llandrillo College's submission outlined an impressive programme, including their revered Staff Training & Event Planning System (STEPS). Many colleges from both Wales and the rest of the UK have visited Llandrillo to see STEPS in action and this has contributed to the College achieving the Best Companies Award 2007 'star status'.

Coleg Menai's 'Supporting Staff in the Achievement of Excellence' project exemplified the college's vision and mission to 'Assist staff to achieve their full potential through continuous training and development programmes'. Staff development priorities include leadership skills, ICT, and teaching and learning skills. All of these are aligned to national (LLUK) standards.

The award was one of eight fforwm awards announced at the annual fforwm conference in Cardiff, which recognise the contribution of colleges in driving up standards in FE education and training and in learner achievement. The winners were applauded for their contribution to the economic, social and cultural fabric of Wales, and for initiating and driving key developments for the benefit of the learner.
