Overview of work based learning

Tutor with trainees (WBL)

Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) represents staff working for organisations concerned with the delivery of applied (vocational) training, which is primarily work based, including national training providers, specialist training providers and in other private sector training organisations.

Approximate numbers of staff working in work based learning (WBL) are as follows:

  • 30,000 staff in England
  • 1,625 staff in Northern Ireland
  • 75,000 in Scotland
  • 30,000 in Wales

There are 2,000 WBL organisations, whose work is funded by education and training departments or designated funding councils/agencies in each of the four UK nations, as well as by regional development agencies, private and public sector employers and the European Social Fund.
