Overview of higher education
Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) represents all staff working in universities, university colleges and colleges of higher education (HE).
Approximate numbers of staff working in HE are as follows:
- 306,620 staff in England
- 7,540 staff in Northern Ireland
- 38,980 in Scotland
- 19,320 in Wales

The research team at Lifelong Learning UK have produced a series of factsheets on the lifelong learning workforce across the UK http://www.lluk.org/the-lifelong-learning-workforce.htm . These draw on UK-wide data sources, HE sector-specific staff numbers and our own research findings.
There are 169 HE institutions across the UK, whose work is funded by the Higher Education Funding Councils for England and Wales (HEFCE and HEFCW), the Department for Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland (DELNI) and the Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council (SFC).
